Parks of Berlin: Ernst-Thälmann-Park

The park, named after former Communist party leader Ernst Thälmann, was built in the mid 80’s. The spot used to be the site of a coal gas plant. Its highly contaminated ground had to be cleared after reports of people in the neighborhood suffering from related health problems.

Usually I just speed through this park to get to or from work. It is a nice stretch of green in the middle of Prenzlauer Berg. Yesterday I finally paused after spotting a bridge through the trees. Dragonflies abound & a heron landing on the lake.

Another reminder to look past dominating monuments, like the massive statue of Ernst Thälmann next to Greifswalder Straße.
